Summer is right around the corner.
And if you’ve recently thought,
“I should probably drop a few pounds before I hit the pool or head out on vacation”
You’re not alone, and you’re not behind.
The good news?
You don’t need to go on a juice cleanse, starve yourself, or jump into a punishing workout program to start seeing results.
Instead, there’s a simple, often overlooked strategy that can actually move the needle on your fat loss goals without making your life miserable:
👉 Prioritize protein.
Protein Isn’t Just for Bodybuilders
(It’s for Fat Loss, Too)
Most people hear “protein” and think of muscle-building.
And while that’s part of the story, protein is also one of the most powerful tools for shedding body fat, especially when combined with a calorie-controlled plan and regular movement.
Here’s why protein works so well:
1. It Keeps You Fuller, Longer
Protein is highly satiating, meaning it helps you feel full and satisfied after meals. When your meals are low in protein, you tend to get hungry again quickly, often reaching for snacks that derail your progress.
By bumping up your protein intake, you naturally reduce cravings and snacking—without relying solely on willpower.
✅ One study found that increasing protein intake from 15% to 30% of total calories led to a spontaneous drop in daily calorie intake by over 400 calories (Weigle et al., 2005).
2. It Protects Your Muscle (So You Burn More Fat)
When you’re trying to lose weight, the goal isn’t just to drop pounds, it’s to lose fat while keeping your muscle.
That’s where protein comes in. Adequate protein helps preserve lean muscle mass, which is metabolically active tissue.
The more muscle you keep, the more calories your body burns at rest.
✅ In a 2013 study, individuals consuming higher protein during a calorie deficit lost more fat and less lean mass than those on a lower-protein diet (Pasiakos et al., 2013).
3. It Supports a Higher Metabolism
Protein has a high thermic effect, meaning your body actually burns more calories digesting protein compared to fats or carbs. This metabolic edge can give you an advantage when trying to create a calorie deficit without excessive restriction.
✅ Protein requires roughly 20-30% of its calories just to be digested and processed, as compared to 5-10% for carbs and 0-3% for fats (Westerterp, 2004).
So… How Much Protein Do You Need?
A great rule of thumb is to eat 1 gram of protein per pound of your goal body weight each day.
- If your goal weight is 150 lbs → aim for ~150g of protein per day
- Spread that out across 3-5 meals or snacks for best results
That may sound like a lot at first—but with a little planning, it’s more manageable than you think.
Three Easy Ways to Increase Your Protein Intake
Here are some quick wins to help you hit your daily protein target:
🥚 1. Prioritize Protein at Breakfast
Start your day with 30–40g of protein. This sets the tone for fewer cravings and more steady energy throughout the day.
Think: eggs, Greek yogurt, turkey sausage, lean ground beef, or a quality protein shake.
🍗 2. Build Every Meal Around a Protein Source
When you plan your meals, think: “Where’s my protein?”
Centering your plate around chicken, fish, eggs, lean beef, tofu, or protein-rich plant options will make it easier to stay full and hit your goals.
🥤 3. Supplement With a High-Quality Protein Shake
Let’s be real: getting enough protein through whole food alone is tough, especially with a busy schedule. A good protein shake (like whey protein isolate or a sustained-release blend) is a convenient, low-calorie way to stay on track without skipping meals or settling for junk.
Just make sure to choose a product that’s low in sugar, high in quality, and easy to digest.
These ones are my personal favorites that I use daily:
- ✅ Level-1 (Sustained Assimilation Protein)
Perfect for meal replacement or snacks!
This slow-digesting protein blend keeps you fuller longer and helps curb cravings between meals. Tastes amazing and mixes well. Vegan & Naturally Sweetened also available!
- ✅ Phormula-1 (Rapid Assimilation Protein)
Ideal for post-workout recovery!
Fast-digesting whey isolate that gets straight to your muscles when they need it most. Pair it with Ignition (fast carbs) for maximum results.
- ✅ Post-Workout Stack (Phormula-1 + Ignition)
This combo helps you recover faster, reduce soreness, and rebuild muscle after a tough training session. A must if you’re training hard or doing any kind of strength work. Vegan & Naturally Sweetened also available!
- ✅ Phormula-1 Clear
A light, refreshing alternative to traditional shakes!
More like a fruity juice drink than a creamy protein shake. Great for summer, especially if you don’t love the texture of regular protein powder.
- ✅ Level-1 Bars
On-the-go lifesavers!
Packed with protein, soft-baked texture, and no weird aftertaste. Great for travel, work, or anytime you need something filling and fast.
These tools make it easier to stay consistent without overcomplicating the day. Just remember: supplements are meant to supplement a strong nutrition foundation, not replace real food entirely.
