We live in a world where comfort is often prioritized. Whether it’s in business, fitness, or personal growth, the allure of the easy path—less stress, fewer challenges, and minimal effort—is tempting. But if you want to become exceptional, you must choose the “Path of Most Resistance“.
In his MFCEO Project, Andy Frisella emphasizes a core truth: “success is born from struggle“. The more you push yourself to take on difficult tasks, face challenges head-on, and embrace discomfort, the more you grow. This isn’t just about mental toughness—it’s about transforming every obstacle into an opportunity to become stronger, smarter, and more resilient.
Why You Should Choose the Hard Path
The easy path might seem appealing at first, but it offers no real growth. If you only ever do what’s comfortable, you’ll stay exactly where you are. Taking the Path of “MOST” Resistance means pushing yourself beyond your limits, constantly improving, and embracing discomfort as the price of progress.
All of this to confirm what we already know – personal excellence is forged through daily challenges. In order to achieve the results we want (you know, those goals and dreams that people tell us we’re crazy for having…), we must develop mental toughness. However, in order to do that, it’s critical that we master resilience and discipline—qualities you can only build by consistently tackling hard things.
Here’s why choosing the hard path matters:
- Growth Only Happens Outside of Comfort: When you confront difficult situations, you’re forced to adapt, learn, and overcome. Whether it’s taking on a challenging project at work, setting ambitious fitness goals, or starting a side business, the resistance you face is exactly what will lead to progress.
- Mental Toughness Is a Byproduct of Adversity: You can’t develop strength without strain. Facing hardships regularly—whether physical, mental, or emotional—builds the fortitude to push through obstacles. By choosing the harder path, you condition your mind to accept discomfort as a natural part of success.
- Accountability and Discipline Thrive on Resistance: When you commit to difficult goals, you also commit to a higher level of accountability. It’s easy to coast when things are simple, but true discipline comes from showing up and performing when things are tough (and especailly when you dont want to).
Tips for Embracing the “Path of Most Resistance“
Here are some tangible tips for making this mindset a core part of your daily life:
- Set BIG Goals: Don’t just aim for what’s achievable—aim for what feels uncomfortable. BIG goals force you out of your comfort zone and make you face your limits.
- For example, if you’re aiming to improve your fitness, don’t just aim for a casual workout. Push yourself to complete a challenging mental toughness program, like 75 Hard, which requires both physical and mental discipline.
- Do the Hard Thing First: Whether in your professional or personal life, tackle the most difficult task at the start of your day. This not only builds momentum but also proves to yourself that you can overcome hard things.
- Example: If you dread making sales calls, commit to making them the first thing you do every morning.
- Seek Out Discomfort Regularly: Make it a habit to embrace activities that push your limits. This could be physical challenges like hiking or cold showers, or it could be mental challenges like learning a new skill or pursuing a difficult project at work.
- Track Progress and Wins: Keep a journal or tracker of the challenges you’ve faced and the wins you’ve achieved. Reflecting on your progress will not only motivate you but also reinforce the idea that taking the hard path leads to growth.
- Use Accountability Systems: If you’re struggling to stay disciplined, create a system of accountability. This could be through an accountability partner, group challenges, or even posting about your progress on social media to keep yourself in check.
The Long-Term Payoff
Choosing the path of most resistance doesn’t bring immediate gratification. The rewards come later—after you’ve been through the struggles, the setbacks, and the moments when you wanted to quit. But when you stay committed to this process, you build something far more valuable than success: you build character, grit, and the confidence to take on anything life throws your way.
When you continually embrace difficult tasks and challenges, you train yourself to see opportunities where others see obstacles. You become the kind of person who thrives in adversity, not because it’s easy, but because you’ve trained yourself to handle it.
